In A.D.1914, in the early months of World War I, the British mounted an invasion of Mesopotamia, present-day Iraq, with a contingent of Anglo-colonial Indian troops. The purpose of this invasion was to divide and engage the Turks-in league with Germany and Austria, who were fighting the Russians, allies of Great Britain and France-in the Caucasian mountain region of Kurdistan.
